Bicycle Safety Tips

 

#1 Use Proper Size Bicycle: Bicycle should not be to large: You should be able to reach the ground, while still setting on the seat, with at lease one foot.

#2 Use Proper Riding Attire: Please wear a helmet and knee pads. This may protect you from injuries, serious injuries , and death , if you should happen to have an accident while riding your bicycle.

#3 Keep Bicycle in Running Order: Make sure bicycle is in running order. This means inspect your bicycle regularly to make sure all parts are in good working order. Make sure the brakes on your bicycle are working properly along with a proper oiled chain and balanced tires.

#4 Use and know the Rules of the Road: Please use and know the rules of the road.  Ride on right side of   roadway in same direction as traffic. Use hand signals when turning or slowing. Ride one to a bicycle.  Stop for stop signs.  Ride with others and in single rows. 

#5 Use Lights and Reflectors: Lights and Reflectors are a must: If you are riding your bicycle in low light are dark conditions you should make sure you have lights and reflectors mounted on your bicycle. Make sure reflectors are kept clean for proper reflection of light. It is also recommended for a person to wear reflective tape on clothing and helmets in a 360degree range for proper visibility.

#6 Find the Right Place to Ride: Use a Safe area to ride your bicycle: Find a safe place to ride your bicycle that has little vehicle traffic. Avoid heavy vehicle traffic areas. Find an area that is smooth such as concrete or asphalt not gravel.

#7 Be Alert, Cautious, and Courteous: Please stay alert and know what is going on around you and also be courteous to others.  Keep focuses to what is going on at all times and watch out for the others around you. Always give vehicles the right a way for they are larger and may not see you.

#8 Protect your Bicycle: Protect your bicycle against damage and theft. Keep your bicycle clean and out of the weather to protect it from rust and corrosion. Also keep your bicycle locked up and out of sight when you are not riding it, to protect it from possibly being stolen. 

#9 Register Your Bicycle: Register your bicycle with your local Police Department. Check to see if your local Police have a Bicycle Registry Program and register your bicycle. At lease take time out to write down a description and serial number off your bicycle for any future references, such as reporting it lost or stolen.

#10 Just Have Fun and Remember: We want you to have fun with your bicycle, so be safe and avoid getting hurt.

Safety Tips

 

#1 Never go trick or treating alone. Go trick or treating with a parent or adult friend.

#2 Go to homes you know.  Only go to people’s houses that you know and trust.

#3 Wear costume that is safe.  Only wear a costume that will not put you in harms way. @ reflective strips for visibility when it gets dark, something warm if it cool out, hoods and mask that do not block your vision and watch out for long loose outfits that can cause you to trip and fall.

#4 Have your parents check your candy. Please wait and have your parents check your candy before you eat it. You never know if anyone might try to harm you by putting something in the food are wrapper.

#5 Look both ways before crossing streets. Please slow down and be safe by checking both directions when crossing a street.

#6 Take a flashlight. Have your parents or someone in your group bring a flash light so you can see where you are walking and motorist can also spot you better.

#7 Do Not talk to strangers. While you are out on the streets at night, please be cautious of anyone you don’t know paying you a lot of attention. Again please don’t go out alone.

PEDESTRIAN RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

SECTION 880.010:     PEDESTRIAN CONTROL SIGNALS

 

Whenever special pedestrian control signals exhibiting the words "Walk" or "Don't Walk" are in place such signals shall indicate as follows:

            1.         "WALK":  Pedestrians facing such signal may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the signal and shall be given the right-of-way by the drivers of all vehicles;

            2.         "WAIT" or "DON'T WALK":  No pedestrian shall start to cross the roadway in the direction of such signal, but any pedestrian who has partially completed his/her crossing on the walk signal shall proceed to a sidewalk or safety zone while the wait signal is showing.  (Ord. No. 1796-00 §1, 8-1-00)

 

SECTION 880.020:     PEDESTRIANS' RIGHT-OF-WAY IN CROSSWALKS

 

A.        When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.

B.         No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.

C.        Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.  (Ord. No. 1796-00 §1, 8-1-00)

 

SECTION 880.030:     PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENTS

 

A.        Pedestrians shall move, whenever practicable, upon the right half (½) of crosswalks.

B.         No pedestrian shall cross a roadway at any place other than by a route at right angles to the curb, or by the shortest route to the opposite curb except in a crosswalk.

C.        Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

D.        No pedestrian shall cross a roadway intersection diagonally.

E.         Where sidewalks are provided it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway.

F.         Where sidewalks are not provided any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall when practicable walk only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction and shall walk outside of the main traveled portion of the roadway.  (Ord. No. 1796-00 §1, 8-1-00)

HOLIDAY SAFETY

 

#1) When shopping, try not to carry large amounts of money or let people see where you keep your money.

#2) Park your vehicle under a streetlight during evening hours for better visibility.

#3) When buying gifts, just get a few at a time and keep them  in the trunk of your car locked up.

#4) When leaving your home to go shopping make sure all doors and windows are locked even though you won’t be gone long.

#5) If stores are crowded always beware of the people around you.

#6) If someone comes up to you and asked for advice be polite but also aware of them.

#7) If you see a lost child in the store comfort them and have someone else look for help.

#8) If you are driving from store to store drive carefully and keep doors locked.

#9) If someone offers to help you carry items thank them and tell them no you are fine.

#10) If you are suspicious of someone point them out to store employee are police.
